The City

Located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore’s tropical climate welcomes both leisure and business travelers year-round. The island republic’s excellent infrastructure enables visitors to enjoy its many sites and attractions in a safe, clean and green environment. The island state is a leader in environmental sustainability, with initiatives to conserve water, reduce waste, and promote green energy.

Award winning Changi Airport provides airlinks to major cities around the world. The train and subway systems are clean, fast and efficient. In addition, its state-of-the-art cruise terminal has established Singapore as one of the premier cruising centres of Southeast Asia and an exciting port of call on any Asian cruise itinerary.

Like most of Southeast Asia, Singapore is generally hot and humid.

CULTURAL CAPITAL OF SOUTHEAST ASIA

One of the reasons that Singapore proves to be such an attraction as a destination is the ease of living, particularly in terms of infrastructure, transportation and governance system. Over the years, Singapore has made significant strides in many areas and has attracted an encouraging number of international accolades which recognise the city as vibrant and world-class. So whether it’s the arts and cultural exchanges, the creation of cutting-edge innovation to enrich the lives of the communities at home or abroad, or the coming together of world-class minds to spark new business opportunities locally and internationally, Singapore is simply, the place where worlds meet.

The currency used in Singapore is Singapore Dollar (SGD$). Notes come in $2, $5, $10, $50 and $100. Coins come in 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents and $1.

Banks are open from Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm. To exchange money, it is recommended to proceed to a designated money exchanger as banks may charge high fees.

Singapore boasts a well connected public transportation system with its extensive network of buses and MRT (Mass Rapid Transit).

Currently, there are 6  MRT lines connecting to over 140 stations across the island. Single use tickets or multi-use passes can be purchased at every train station.

Popular ride-hailing apps in Singapore are Grab, Gojek and ComfortDelGro.

There are four official languages – English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Among these, English is the main language used in the country.

Tipping is encouraged at hotels, restaurants and taxis. However, some restaurants often include a 10% service charge in the bill. If this is the case, you can choose not to tip. In addition, tipping is not required for food stalls, cafes or bars.
