This workshop is an innovative and practical intermediate course for physiotherapists to learn how to perform and adopt advanced bedside skills through lung and diaphragmatic point of care ultrasound (POCUS) in clinical practice.
Lung Ultrasound (LUS)
Ultrasound of the lung enables non-invasive and rapid diagnosis as well as day-to-day monitoring of many acute lung conditions such as effusion, consolidation, atelectasis, pulmonary oedema, and pneumothorax. The ultrasound is more accurate than the chest x-ray. It is non-invasive, portable and easily available in most intensive care units in the hospitals. POCUS will aid physiotherapists in diagnosing and identifying pathological lung conditions before and after chest physiotherapy. This can result in more accurate management of the pathology especially in critical care.
Diaphragm Ultrasound (DUS)
Ultrasound of the diaphragm enables non-invasive and rapid diagnosis as well as day-to-day monitoring of acute and chronic diaphragmatic conditions. The ultrasound is more accurate than the chest x-ray. It is non-invasive, portable, and easily available in most intensive care units in the hospitals. POCUS will aid physiotherapists in diagnosing and identifying pathological diaphragmatic conditions before and after chest physiotherapy and/or liberation from mechanical ventilation support. POCUS of the diaphragm can assist in deliverance of accurate management in critical care through early real-time identification of the pathology.
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
- Acquire basic skills and interpret ultrasonography in relevance to intensive care physiotherapy.
- Learn how to perform and report ultrasound examination of the lungs.
- Learn how to perform and report ultrasound diaphragmatic of the diaphragm.
- Understand clinical uses and limitations of ultrasound in assessment of lung pathology, pleural effusion, consolidation, atelectasis, pulmonary oedema, and pneumothorax.
- Understand clinical uses and limitations in assessment of diaphragm pathologies; diaphragmatic paralysis, neuromuscular diseases and ICU acquired weakness.

This introductory workshop allows allied health professionals (i.e. physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers) and nursing professionals to understand the psychosocial predictors and barriers of health behaviour change. Fundamental concept of the Transtheoretical Model and approaches of the Motivational Interviewing technique will be practised for allied health and nursing professionals working with clients towards treatment adherence. Using case studies from Singapore, workshop participants will benefit from learning about various practical strategies that helps facilitate an individual’s motivation to change health behaviour and improve overall treatment adherence.
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
- Identify and discuss implications of psychosocial predictors and barriers of health behaviour change and treatment adherence using latest evidence from literature.
- Understanding the stages of change of the Transtheoretical Model and its application for the Allied Health Professionals.
- Applying basic principles of motivational interviewing and role play practice of effective interviewing skills.
- Apply and practice learnt skills on local Allied Health and nursing case studies.

Multiple healthcare organisations develop clinical practice guidelines. However, implementation of these guidelines can take years to be fully implemented if they ever are. Use of implementation science has the potential to reduce this research to practice gap. There are methods within implementation science which help healthcare organisations integrate guidelines within specific populations and areas of practice. Using newly published guidelines that were jointly developed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Council on Exercise (ACE), this workshop will showcase how practitioners and their facilities can use implementation science to implement the guidelines.
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
- Gain knowledge on implementation science principles and learn how to translate them to a clinical environment.
- Acquire knowledge on the joint ACE and Academy guidelines on Nutrition and Physical Activity for the general population.
- Learn how a facility may begin to implement guidelines and collect data on implementation via a case-study approach.

Participants will learn practical and demonstrable skills as part of a more extensive introduction to workforce redesign and task sharing across Allied Health professions. The tools are based on the Calderdale Framework (an evidence-based workforce transformation tool) and content from the lived experience of the framework and other initiatives at Christchurch Hospital, Health New Zealand.
The workshop begins with an introduction and discussion of definitions to clarify language and standardise understanding.
An overview of the UK designed Calderdale Framework based on Foundation Day content is followed by a journey through the lived experience in Christchurch Hospital, Health New Zealand. Participants will see, do, and teach various tools for service and task analysis, and clinical task instructions while placing these in their strategic context.
The final part of the workshop changes focus from skill sharing and workforce organisation to a Patient Training Framework. Participants will create and present patient training instructions and knowledge bites. The session will conclude with reflective practice to gain insights from the workshop.

Autoimmune diseases are a complex and heterogeneous group of conditions characterised by immune system dysregulation, leading to tissue damage, organ/systemic dysfunction. The diagnosis and management of these disease pose significant challenges due to their multifaceted nature. Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA) have long been a cornerstone in the detection of autoimmune diseases, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, the utility of ANA testing extends beyond immunology, correlating with other tests such as cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) and complement levels (C3/C4), can provide valuable insights to diagnostic accuracy. The convergence of these tests facilitates a more comprehensive understanding of disease pathogenesis, enabling healthcare providers to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
- Go through the basics of ANA – screening test.
- Paint a complete picture by correlating results of various parameters.

This workshop aims to provide knowledge and impart skills to participants in the area of setting up of a multidisciplinary exercise and supported communication training programme for people after stroke.
Group programmes for people after stroke can provide multiple benefits for physical function and communication. These multiple benefits are more robust when delivered in a multidisciplinary context.
The workshop will provide therapists with skills to establish a multi-component programme in their workplace or community that includes physical activity (based on the Fitness and Mobility Exercise for Stroke) and structured supported conversations (using the ICF framework). It is a practical-based programme, where therapists will work through the steps that need to be considered for establishing programme in their setting.
They will practise skills required to establish a programme that includes functional strength, agility as well as balance and supported communication training during a structured social group. Sustainable implementation will also be facilitated by practical activities and provision of resources that will support participants to deliver training to other therapists and allied health assistants in their workplace.
